![]() Mission StatementThe New York Caledonian Club, established in 1856, is a not-for-profit corporation, based in New York City that serves cultural, educational and charitable functions. It is tax-exempt under section 501(c) (3) of the Internal Revenue Code.About UsMembership in the New York Caledonian Club is "open to the world" - that is, to anyone with an interest in Scotland. The Club operates under the direction of a Chief, a Chieftain and a Board of Directors, all of whom are elected by the full membership of the Club. There are two formal meetings of members each year, one of which is for the election of officers and directors.The Club hosts a number of cultural and social events, which are open to members and non-members, to celebrate the musical, literary and social heritage of Scottish culture. The Club's signature event is its annual Burns Supper, a traditional celebration of the creative genius of Robert Burns. Other events vary according to the interest of the Club's members; frequently held events include a Saint Andrew's Day Kirking (blessing) of the Tartans on Saint Andrew's Day, a Halloween party, Hogmanay (a Scottish New Year's Eve Celebration), and ceilidhs (social gatherings). As a member of The National Tartan Day New York Committee, the Club helps to organize and participates in the National Tartan week events in New York City each April. As part of its educational mission, the New York Caledonian Club's Scottish Studies Program provides classes on subjects including bagpiping, speaking Gaelic, and various styles of dance. Classes are open to all and are designed to accommodate students of varying levels. The Club also sponsors concerts and speakers on topics pertaining to Scottish history and culture. The New York Caledonian Club makes charitable contributions to organizations in the U.S. and Scotland. Some Club events have a designated charity as beneficiary. The Club has made contributions in this way to Gilda's Club, a support network for cancer patients and their families. The Club is a supporting organization of the British Memorial Garden in lower Manhattan. The New York Caledonian Club is a member of An Comunn Gaidhealach Ameireaga, which promotes the study of Scottish Gaelic in the United States, The Conference of Patriotic and Historical Societies, The One Hundred Year Association, and the Council of Scottish Clans and Associations.
